Take small steps when crate training your dog. Once your dog is accustomed to being in the crate, try closing the door and giving your pet a treat through the wire. Use small increments of time, and build them up as your puppy or dog becomes more relaxed with the process. If they get upset, it’s too fast.

Never tie two or more dogs in close vicinity to one another. The leashes or chains can become intertwined, causing harm to one or more of the dogs. A larger dog could cause a tangle so bad that the smaller dog could be choked by the leash.
Try to get your dog on a regular feeding schedule. Before the dog goes to the bathroom on your carpet, you will know when it has to go outside. When a dog has a schedule, they also learn the valuable skill of “holding it” until you take him for his next scheduled trip outside.
You should never do long sessions of training. Since dogs have a tough time paying attention, you do not want to draw out the process. If you want to engage in additional training, allow the dog to have a break in order to get some exercise.
Start by teaching your puppy his name. Repeat the name as much as possible, and reward your puppy when he responds. It is a good idea to have your puppy learn these words first. Spend a lot of time getting to know your pup, and building a loving relationship with him so he knows who to trust. This will help them become more receptive to harder training later.
Your dog needs to be trained throughout his entire life to ensure excellent behavior. You do not have to stop training them as a puppy. By reinforcing positive behavior, your dog will remain obedient, just as continued discipline can stop poor behavior from taking hold.
Don’t bog your puppy down with more information than he can process. A puppy only has short bursts of energy and doesn’t have a long attention; you’ve got to keep your training sessions positive and short. When you put too much training on the animal at one time, it can stress the animal and work against what you are trying to accomplish. The tone of your voice is important during training. Praise, corrections, and commands need their own tones to help the dog differentiate between effects and causes with both of your behaviors. Be firm with your command, speak louder to reprimand your dog and take a softer voice to praise your dog.
Consistency makes it easier to teach your dog how to control himself. When you are home with your dog, remember to take him out every hour. When the dog relieves himself outside, give him praise. When he goes inside, don’t punish him. He is not yet aware that this is wrong and he is going to learn if you just yell at him. Take the dog for a walk approximately 15 minutes following a meal or a drink and each time it comes out of the crate.
Even if you have had your dog for an extended period of time and they have not been properly trained, you can use the information that has been provided to properly train them. An untrained dog can inadvertently injure someone simply because they do not know better.
