When you correct your dog verbally, ensure your corrections are direct and short. Do not go on and on about how bad the dog is behaving. Simply address the issue and move on. Let your dog know that if you raise your voice they need to pay attention.
A main focus of training is timing your sessions appropriately. Shorter training sessions are better at the beginning of your program. Note how far into the training session your dog loses his attention span. That’s the time to quit.
Crate training requires extreme consistency. The first thing to keep in mind is that you must let him use the bathroom as soon as he’s let out. When done with consistency, your dog will trust you and wait for the right time to relieve himself.
When using a crate to train your dog, you’ll want to make sure that you select the right size. Keep in mind that your puppy will eventually grow into a bigger dog. Choose a crate which will be suitable for the puppy when he matures into an adult. Generally speaking, your pet should be able to circle, sit and sleep without discomfort.
Teach your puppy his name when you first start training him, as this creates a bond between the two of you. In the first days, frequently use your dog’s name, and reward him for responding when you call. You should make sure your puppy learns their name and knows to respond to it. If you are consistent, your puppy can learn to “hold it.” Be sure to take your puppy out for scheduled, hourly potty breaks when you’re home. Make sure that you give praise if your dog goes to the bathroom outdoors. If your dog has an accident in the home, do not scold him. The dog is not aware that this is undesirable behavior, and scolding will not change that fact. Bathroom breaks are required after meals or after leaving the crate.
Your canine training program should incorporate at least a little fun. Keep the sessions between 10-15 minutes, as this is about the attention span of most dogs. Be generous when it is time to reward! Give your dog plenty of praise and affection for his hard work and efforts. When you make training fun for your dog, it will make listening in general fun for the dog too!
Challenge your dog frequently. Give him “quizzes” to make sure he still knows his stuff, even if you both know he does.
If you catch your puppy chewing something that he should not be chewing, put an immediate stop to it. Switch out the inappropriate object for an item that belongs to your puppy to allow him to realize what is and is not okay.
Pay attention to your dog’s behavior to help prevent potty accidents indoors. Most dogs do the same things when they need to urinate. By learning this pattern, you can take your dog outside immediately, which teaches him appropriate behaviors. When you’re deeply in touch with your own dog, training goes more easily.
You will get better results if employ a mixture of treats as a reward for your dog. These treats cannot be confused with every day treats at first, because you need to create a sense of specialness which will encourage the dog to obey your commands, since they know that the treats they will be receiving are out of the ordinary.
