A trained dog is a happy dog. You both understand what is expected out of each other. You won’t have to worry much about doing public outings or letting him stay home alone after he is trained. It may take a lot of time, but in the end, your dog will prove to you that the training has been worth it.
It is of utmost importance that you reward your dog consistently and correctly while training. If you give your dog some treats at the proper time, they will respond to training. If your timing is off, your dog will not understand what you are rewarding.
Timing is everything in dog training, and you need to make sure you don’t overdo it. Start with a short session and gradually add more time to it. You can figure out when your dog isn’t paying attention during training.
Chew Toys
Give them chew toys for pain relief while teething, and keep everything else out of reach. Replace the item immediately with one of the dog’s own chew toys. In cases where your puppy is suffering a great deal of pain, try soaking a washcloth in water and freezing it as a numbing chew toy.
Dogs generally focus on one thing while ignoring everything around them, unless something interrupts that intense focus. With enough repetition, your dog will focus on other things less and less, opting to wait for signals from you.
To strengthen your training efforts, you can use a designated verbal command to help your animal know what your expectations are and when they have been fulfilled. Certain words like “yes” are great for bridging the time between obeying an order and receiving the reward.
You should pick a phrase to say to your puppy while he is being house trained. Whenever you take your pet outside to use the bathroom, choose a phrase, like “go potty”, so he remembers what he is there to do.
If your canine jumps on top of you, gently grab their paws and squeeze them; this will tell them that they cannot jump. This does not hurt the dog if you do it lightly, but it is an uncomfortable feeling for them. Soon your dog will believe that this will happen every time he jumps up and will stop jumping up.
Only train your pet with positive reinforcement methods. Remember to show your dog positive attention when they do something good as often as you can. You should not strike your dog or scream at them. These tactics backfire and just make your dog believe you are incompetent. Stick to the plan and maintain a positive attitude for great results.
Teach your puppy his or her name before you start to train him or her, as this creates a bond. Use his name frequently, and train him to come to you when called. His name should be the first word he learns. Spend lots of time with your dog, so it gets to know you and understands that you are to be trusted. This way, you will find future training to be infinitely easier.
Training methods you use should be consistent. If there are several trainers, ensure that they are all being consistent with rewards and commands. Your pet will have a better time at learning once it knows what response to expect from his behavior.
Use various tones of voice when training your dog. For example, use a different tone when praising your dog than you do when commanding your dog to obey. Commands should be clearly stated in a firm tone. Corrections and reprimands must be spoken more firmly, while praise should be delivered in a natural tone.
Make sure you’re aware of any other dogs in the area when walking your dog. Not all dogs are friendly, and not all owners are responsible. If you see an antisocial or aggressive dog, avoid having your dog be near it.
If you are leash training a puppy, put the collar on him in advance of training. Leashes are important for control and identification if you lose your pet.
Training your dog is big on making rules for the relationship just like you would with people, you will have such a better time with each other once the rules are in place. It is important that you are always reinforcing what you have taught your dog. Refresh your dog’s knowledge with exercises and remain strict. Once your dog learns the basic training skills, the sky is the limit!
