Training your dog is a lot like programming a new TV remote. With your help, he will learn what is expected of him and behave in an appropriate manner. Your dog can already do these things, they just need to be shown how to do them.
When training a puppy to use a crate it is important to take your time and start with only a few steps at a time. After they become used to each individual step and do not mind going inside the crate, try shutting the door and giving them treats with the door closed. Use small increments of time, and build them up as your puppy or dog becomes more relaxed with the process. If you notice the animal becoming tense or confused, you are probably proceeding too quickly.
Always give your puppy plenty of toys to chew on to help with teething pain. Otherwise, you might find your shoes becoming chew toys. Immediately replace it with one of his designated chew toys. Teething can cause puppies significant pain. Give them relief by letting them chew on a washcloth that is wet and frozen.
Do not tie a dog up near another dog, or dogs. The dogs chains could get tangled up and cause harm to the dogs as they struggle to get free. Becoming wrapped up could also cause death if one of the dogs gets so tangled and wrapped up his airway closes.
Before you begin training your dog, you need to establish yourself as the alpha. Put yourself in an authoritative position, so that your dog knows to obey you. Always walk in front of the dog when you go on walks, because this is the position to show leadership.
To strengthen your training efforts, you can use a designated verbal command to help your animal know what your expectations are and when they have been fulfilled. Even a simple monosyllabic spoken ‘yes’ can help the dog to connect the desired behavior with the imminent reward.
Avoid accidents if you want to housebreak your dog. Try to recognize your dog’s body language and anticipate his need to go out. Pacing, snuffing and whining are common. Don’t put it off when your dog is doing these things. Head outdoors to the assigned potty spot right away. Whenever your dog uses the restroom outside, reward him or her with lots of praise. With some time, your dog will be able to tell you when he needs to go outside.
Effective dog training requires a level firmness. That said, love should prevail and yelling should never occur. This fosters a strong relationship between you and your dog.
Once you can bring out a dog’s ability to be trained, it is just a matter of consistently practicing the techniques. Dogs love to make their owners happy, so training them is actually enjoyable for them as well.
